Eliza Newlin Carney is a Washington writer, editor and columnist specializing in political money and democracy issues. Carney is also founder and president of The Civic Circle,\u00a0<\/a>a nonprofit that uses music and drama to teach young kids about democracy and civic life. She is former senior editor at The American Prospect<\/em>, and was previously a senior writer at CQ Roll Call, <\/em>and a writer and columnist for National Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A longtime K Street and campaign finance trend spotter, Carney coined the term “super PAC,”<\/a> and has written extensively about campaign financing, ethics, lobbying and voting rights.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>She has offered commentary as a guest on C-SPAN, CNN, Fox News, National Public Radio and the PBS NewsHour. She has been a panelist at the American Political Science Association\u2019s annual conference; the Bipartisan Policy Center; the Brookings Institution; the Cato Institute; the National Press Club Speaker\u2019s Bureau and the Sunlight Foundation, among others.<\/p>\n

Carney’s writing has also appeared in The New Republic, Talking Points Memo, Sludge, <\/em>The Fulcrum<\/em>, and American Journalism Review<\/em>, among other outlets. Carney previously covered Capitol Hill for States News Service, where her subscribing newspapers included The New York Times<\/em> and The Evening Sun <\/em>of Baltimore.<\/p>\n

Carney\u2019s other experience includes working as an adjunct journalism professor at George Washington University\u2019s School of Media and Public Affairs. She has a Master\u2019s degree from Columbia University\u2019s Graduate School of Journalism, and a B.A. from Swarthmore College. Her work has been recognized by the Capital Press Women and the Philadelphia Press Association.<\/p>\n

A choral singer, songwriter and acoustic music promoter in her free time, Carney produced a children\u2019s CD titled \u201cLove Flows Down<\/a>\u201d in 2007. She lives in Silver Spring, Md., with her husband,\u00a0USA Today<\/em> editorial writer Dan Carney.<\/p>\n
